Creating your own Wi-Fi hotspot on your cruise

21 August 2024

Internet on cruise ships is normally really expensive, and you probably don't want to pay for more Internet than you need. In this blog we'll show you three ways you can share your Internet connection between multiple devices.

Cost of Internet on Cruise Ships

On Royal Caribbean a single device Internet package can easily cost you more that $28 per day. If you purchase multiple devices the price per device may drop to around $16 per device per day. During sales the prices may drop to around $20 per device per day for a single device.

Wi-Fi Hotspot

One of the best ways to make the most of your Internet package is to create your own Wi-Fi hotspot. A Wi-Fi hotspot allows you to share your Internet connection between multiple devices. There are three ways that we recommend doing this; using a travel router, using and Android phone or setting up a Wi-Fi hotspot on your Windows computer.

Wi-Fi Travel Router

A Wi-Fi travel router is basically a small portal Wi-Fi hotspot. It works like a normal wireless router, but with the advantage of being small, portable and can connect to an existing Wi-Fi network in the same way as your smartphone, tablet or computer can. We use the TP-Link AC750 Wireless Portable Travel Router ourselves and recommend it to our customers.

It is always on
You need to purchase, pack and travel with yet another device.

Android Hotspot

Most Android phones can share mobile data by Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or USB. This is also known as tethering. Android allows you to create a Wi-Fi hotspot while connected to another Wi-Fi network, whereas iPhones can only create Wi-Fi hotspots when connected to a mobile phone network, not while connected to a Wi-Fi network.

Windows Mobile Hotspot

PCs running Windows 10 or later have a fantastic feature called Mobile Hotspot. Mobile Hotspot allows you to create your own Wifi Hotspot that you can share between your devices. Modern Windows laptops allow you to connect to a Wi-Fi network while at the same time run a hotspot. Before purchasing our first Wi-Fi travel router this was how we create out hotspots.
