Most if not all cruise ships have a future or next cruise desk where you can book your future sailings. The cruise lines use discounts and onboard credit to get you to commit to a future sailing. The major cruise lines also offer a book later option.

Book later

Book later allows you to get the benefits of creating a booking at the next cruise desk, without having to commit to a particular sailing while onboard or spend time queuing for an appointment.

If you go for book later, ensure that you know the terms and conditions. You will have a certain amount of time to place the open booking before you lose your deposit.

Royal's book later option is called NextCruise Book Later and gives you 1 years in which to book your cruise. If you don't book within 1 year you will lose your deposit.
